Baxter Society,
Portland ME,
1990.
First Edition.
Book, unpaginated; booklet, 37pp: A facsimile of the first illustrated book entirely by Rockwell Kent, written, illustrated and produced by Kent in a single copy for his mistress of 1917, a Broadway dancer of uncommon beauty named Hildegard Hirsch. Published in a LIMITED EDITION OF 500 NUMBERED COPIES (here, 125), the set consists of a facsimile bound in blue-gray paper boards, buckram spine, handbound and printed in lithography by the Stinehour Press for the Baxter Society; and a paper-bound booklet in matching blue-gray wrappers, recounting the affair and detailing the book itself. The booklet is prefaced by Kent's widow [who was not his wife at the time of his affair]. A beautiful, near mint copy. Very fine.
